Abstract
This presentation, delivered by DT Vo, reflects on a 36-year postgraduate journey in the oil and gas industry, primarily with Chevron-Unocal Corporation. It shares key lessons learned across diverse roles and global assignments, emphasizing continuous learning, adaptation, and technical development. The presentation covers career milestones, reflecting on the importance of networking, and balancing business needs with personal growth. Technical discussions address a sample of various subjects, including the process involved in life-cycle asset and project development and execution, reserves and resources assessment, and subsurface integrity. The narrative encourages knowledge building from foundational principles and applying with innovation, developing others, and maintaining an active plan for professional and personal growth. The insights aim to guide students and professionals in shaping their own industry paths through reflection of skill development, application and adaptability.
A summary of key takeaways of themes of lessons learned is provided below, i.e., a roadmap for building a fulfilling career in the oil and gas industry, emphasizing technical rigor, adaptability, and the importance of personal and professional development.
1. Learning and Adaptability
- Embrace continuous learning, seek out new skills, and adapt to changing environments and technologies.
- Be proactive in testing and applying new ideas, participating in professional organizations, and sharing knowledge through publications and networking.
- Having a plan for career development with growth and relevance.
2. Career Development through Diverse Experiences
- Rotating through different roles and locations (from R&D to field operations, and across the US and beyond) broadens technical, environmental and cultural perspectives.
- Each assignment should follow a cycle: learning, applying, and then documenting and sharing insights.
- Seek opportunities for field experience and accept challenging roles, balancing with personal and family growth.
3. Technical Excellence in Asset and Project Development and Valuation
- Understand what role you play and contribute in the full life cycle of oil and gas projects, from opportunity identification to execution and evaluation.
- Focus on fundamentals, risk management, and the integration of multi-disciplinary teams.
- Develop a strong grasp of the basis of design, uncertainties, and the impact of technical decisions on project value.
4. Importance of Reserves, Resources, and Forecast Reliability
- Recognize the significance of reserves and resources in company valuation and project planning.
- Learn the differences between deterministic and probabilistic assessments, and the importance of confidence levels in technical and economic evaluations.
- Apply this understanding to guide studies and professional development focus.
5. Subsurface Integrity and Risk Management
- Understand and maintain subsurface integrity by managing potential hazards such as well integrity, cap rock breaches, and surface leaks.
- Assess risks, implement mitigation strategies, and understand the implications for both operations and environmental stewardship.
- Use these lessons to inform technical studies and decision-making.
6. Networking, Mentoring, and Developing Others
- Build and leverage professional networks, both internally and externally.
- Dedicate time to mentoring, training, and developing others, recognizing the value of voluntary participation in professional societies and academic support.
- Balance business needs with personal growth and family considerations.
7. Strategic Planning and Execution
- Have both near- and long-term plans, actively pursue them, and involve stakeholders.
- Be prepared to adapt plans as circumstances change, ensuring alignment with business, technical, and personal goals.
